Istanbul's summer programme revolves around its open-air stages: KüçükÇiftlik Park, Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu, and the festivals that spill out beyond the city. Here is what stands out this summer, and what to watch for.

The open-air stages

Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu has stood since 1947 and is the city's best-loved stage for its acoustics. Under the trees, at a scale of 4,200 people, it offers a far more intimate evening than the big arenas. KüçükÇiftlik Park, with a capacity of 17,000, is the venue of choice for major tour stops.

Indoor halls appear in the summer programme too, but they have a different character: venues like Zorlu PSM are unaffected by the weather and acoustically controlled. Open air is a choice about atmosphere; an indoor hall is a choice about certainty. Decide which one you want before you buy.

What to check when buying

• Open-air events carry a rain risk; read the refund policy before you buy.
• Check whether the listed price includes the service fee — a price that grows at the payment step is a common complaint.
• Joining the waiting list for a sold-out event is free; returned tickets are distributed from there.
• Do not buy tickets through social media; if the transfer is not official, you cannot verify that the QR code is valid.

One observation about price: tickets released at the start of summer are usually the cheapest. As demand builds, the lower categories sell out first and only the expensive ones remain — so waiting tends to cost more, not less.

Festivals move out of the city

In midsummer the big festivals move outside Istanbul. Campsites, shuttle services and multi-day tickets change how you plan — book the festival ticket together with travel and accommodation, not on its own.
